NICK SIMMONS MAKES A STATEMENT
MARCH 1, 2010: Apparently Nick Simmons has released a statement. Nick Simmons Releases Statement, Takes No Responsibility and Incarncate Creator Nick Simmons Responds to Plagiarism Allegations. In this statement he makes no apologies for what he did. He also states that there were certain similarities between his work and the work of other but it was meant as a homage to artists he respects.
Wait! O_o What?!?!? Similarities?!?!? Is he serious?!?!?! O_o
I keep seeing comments from people on sites reporting on the whole Nick Simmons incident that Tite Kubo doesn’t really seem to mind that Nick stole from him. I don’t know if that’s accurate or not but I really hope it isn’t. Kubo and the other artists Nick is being accused of ripping off, as well as the publishing companies (i.e Viz), need to take this whole incident seriously and take legal action. If Nick Simmons is allowed to get away with this what kind of message is that sending to everyone? If Nick Simmons is allowed to get away with this then artists everywhere (well-known or not) are going to be at a much greater risk of being ripped off and there won’t be much they can do about it. Might as well just toss those copyright laws in the shredder because they obviously don’t really mean anything. We could make lots of money off of other peoples work with little effort AND we could get away with it simply by denying we traced anything and telling everyone that we were just paying homage to our favorite artists.
I have a lot of manga I can start tracing copying referencing as a tribute to my favorite artists like – Naruto, Bleach, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Inuyasha, Saiyuki, Tsubasa Chronicles (just to name a few).
So if you’ll excuse me I’m going to rush to the store to buy out all the tracing paper before the rest of you beat me to it…
